Blow Drying: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

Blow Drying Your Hair
Damaging your hair. It’s something no one in their right mind wants to do. And yet, every day, people are unknowingly damaging their hair and creating problems that are frustrating. If you’ve ever wondered why your hair won’t behave like you want it to, chances are it’s because your hair is damaged. While some hair damage cannot be prevented, some of it can. There are many products that can help prevent the damage that blow drying can cause. While there are also many products that can help with the after-effect of blow drying. You may not be aware that there is help! Many people have questioned whether or not blow drying the hair is damaging, and the truth is, there’s no proven answer to this question. However, it is obvious what the pros and cons of blow drying your hair are.

The Pros of Blow Drying Your Hair
It’s Quick

We’re all extremely busy individuals. Most of us have to go to work or school or take care of our children or perhaps all three. A great many people do not have the time to wait an hour or two for their hair to dry, particularly if they have very long hair. Thus, blow drying their hair is quick and easy solution to the problem. Even if you have long hair, it will usually only take 10 minutes to blow dry it.

You Can Train Your Hair

When you air dry your hair, you aren’t able to completely control how it looks. When you blow dry your hair, you are able to train it. For those with really wavy hair who would like it to be more controlled, blow drying the hair can be a great thing. Atop of blow drying your hair, you can use product to help coax your hair to do as you want. Graham Webb Halo Medium Hold Gel, is a great product that delivers long-lasting control, shine, and styling versatility. Another product to help train your hair is the Kenra Perfect Medium Spray. This is a medium-hold spray that allows hair to be free of stiffness while providing styling control. Using a holding gel or spray is a great method to slowly train your hair into being styled a certain way. The ability to try out new hair styles is one of the biggest pros to blow drying and the reason why many people do it.

Create Volume

Some people have natural hair volume, while others don’t. If you don’t have a lot of hair volume, blow drying could be a great solution. There are plenty of ways to add volume to your hair. There is an alternative to drying out your hair with the day-to-day method of blow drying. Pureology Pure Volume Blow Dry Amplifier is a light-weight, heat activated amplifier that delivers moisture and maximum body to your hair. Big Sexy Hair Blow Dry Volumizing Gel is another great product to infuse your hair with the maximum volume possible! While blow drying your hair offers a quick ‘poof’ effect to volumize your hair, you can give it a lasting effect with product; it can make your hair look better for a longer period of time.

The Cons of Blow Drying Your Hair
Split Ends

Split ends are a nightmare for people who want great looking hair. In fact, the reason why many people cut their hair often is to get rid of split ends as they appear. Unfortunately, with consistent blow dryer use comes the possibility of developing split ends. There are products available that can nourish and close up your split ends. For instance, Joico K-Pak Reconstruct Split End Mender is an amazing product for repairing split ends. While this product has the ability to fix your straight ends, it also protects your hair from being damaged further. Another preventative treatment is the Bonacure Repair Rescue Sealed Ends. This Bonacure product prevents split-ends by sealing cuticles and restructuring the hair tips. Split ends are often caused by blow drying your hair at an excessive heat. Excessive heat can cause your hair to become brittle and break off.

Frizz

It doesn’t happen to all people who blow dry, but it does happen to some. When you blow dry with an upward motion, you are setting your hair up to become frizzy. Even if you do it with a straight, even motion, with long term blow dryer use, you may still end up with frizzy, uncontrollable hair. But there are preventative measures you can take to reduce frizz! Scruples has an amazing Smooth Out Gel for exactly this purpose! This ultimate styling gel is a tool used to tame frizzy hair.

Dry Scalp

Many of us have dealt with dry scalp (dandruff) at one point or another, and it’s certainly not a very pleasant thing. While there are many causes for it, one of the contributing factors is blow drying. Blow drying the hair obviously dries out the scalp, and a dry scalp can develop dandruff. Not everyone will get dry scalp from blow drying, but those that do are usually people who blow dry every day. Hair-care manufacturers keep a close eye on remedys and potential solutions for dry scalp problems. Brocato has recently released a new product for exactly this purpose! Brocato Peppermint Scrub – Fresh Hair & Scalp Leave-In Tonic will liven your hair with an immense mixture of essential oils and proteins. These factors contribute to a moisturized scalp and healthy hair.

  1. Dear Alayna@Stuff4Beauty,

I’ve recently been using deep conditioners designed for fine, porous hair. Now, my hair seems to dry more quickly and seems more healthy and moist without being overly moisturized and oily. (I also cut off a few inches of dead ends in back). Thank you, Alayna, for your concern and advise pursuent to my email. I’m also using non-lathering shampoo. Seems strange at first, but is working well for me.
    Thank you for responding.

    Linda

  2. Using a non-lathering shampoo can seem odd at first, but once you get used to it you may be surprised how much it helps!

Thank you so much for your positive feedback, as it is more than appreciated!

Best wishes to the recovering health of your hair!

    Alayna
