While most of us long for a day at the beach or by the pool in the hot summer, our hair prefers that we stay away and not expose it to the sand, salt, chlorine and sun. Summer is a fun time to be outdoors, but it can also be very hard time on your hair if you are not careful to shield it from the weather and other summer elements. By understanding the things that can damage your hair you can better protect it so you will not need to spend all winter trying to restore it.
One of the first things you should always do for your hair is to use a good salon quality shampoo and conditioner that is designed for your specific hair type. This means that if you have very fine hair you will want to use a light shampoo and conditioner; if you have very coarse hair you will want to use a more moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. During the summer months you might want to shampoo less and use a cold rinse to help seal in the natural moisture of your hair.
You might be surprised to know that the heat from the summer sun can be just as damaging to your hair as a hot blow dryer. If you normally blow dry your hair, try to let it air dry more during the summer months. This will give it a rest from the heat and drying effects. If you must blow dry your hair try using a lower heat setting or an ionic blow dryer.
During the hot summer months it is very important to provide your hair with the extra moisture it desires. You can accomplish this by applying a deep conditioner once each week. This is especially effective after a long day in the sun and water.
If you will be spending a long day by the water, consider wearing a hat or using a leave-in conditioner which contains SPF protection for your hair. If you forget to bring a hat, or do not have a conditioner with SPF protection, you can use sunscreen in a pinch. Just make sure you shampoo your hair well when you return home.
If you will be spending a lot of time in a chlorinated pool during the summer, you should always wash your hair thoroughly after you get out of the water using a good clarifying shampoo. You should never attempt a chlorinated pool after a recent perm! The chlorine in the water can react with the perm chemicals and do all kinds of nasty things to your hair. Your hair can become very dry or even turn green.
While the summer can be a fun time to enjoy it is important to take extra good care of your hair to protect it from the heat and the other elements of summer. By taking care of your hair in the summer months you can have beautiful looking hair year-round.
